BMX Hub Guards
What Are BMX Hub Guards?
To prevent damage to your BMX hubs and spokes, hub guards are an excellent choice. These are cone-shaped caps placed on the exterior of the front or rear hub at the wheel's centre. During rides involving grinds on rails and edges, hub guards serve as a protective shield for the wheel. They can also minimise friction, ensuring your grinds are smoother and longer-lasting.
When selecting a hub guard, it's crucial to identify the type you require. Front hub guards are designed for a 10 mm axle, while rear hub guards accommodate a 14 mm axle. Additionally, there is a distinction between drive-side and non-drive-side hub guards. Each drive-side guard features a cut-out section to allow the chain to rotate around the driver without interference.
Universal Hub Guards and Materials
Some brands provide universal hub guards. As you might expect, these guards are compatible with most configurations and are not restricted to specific brands. They are offered in versions for both front and rear hubs.
BMX hub guards are available in various materials, with nylon and aluminium being the most prevalent. A nylon hub guard facilitates an easier grind compared to its aluminium counterpart. Conversely, the aluminium hub guard offers greater durability. Whichever you choose, grinding with a guard instead of without will ensure a smoother ride.
