BMX Frames
Understanding BMX Frames
The BMX bike frame is the most significant and costly component of your BMX ensemble. It greatly affects how you ride and develop as a cyclist. Both freestyle and BMX race frames feature the classic diamond shape, but race frames are typically longer to enhance stability.
Freestyle BMX bike frames are crafted to endure significant impacts, prioritising durability and strength, hence they are often made from steel. In contrast, race frames aim to be as light as possible and are usually built from aluminium.
How to Choose the Right BMX Frame Size
BMX frames are available in various sizes. The size you need is largely a matter of personal preference. However, a good rule of thumb is that the taller you are, the larger your frame should be.
Frame sizes are generally gauged by the length of their top tube. For freestyle frames, this is usually measured in inches. Race BMX frames have distinct categories, with names starting from Mini all the way up to Pro XXXXL.
In addition to the top tube length, consider the headtube angle, as this can influence the bike's overall feel. A steeper angle pulls the front wheel closer, facilitating front-end tricks, while a less steep angle places the wheel further away, providing better control at high speeds. If you are unsure of your preference, opt for the industry standard angle, which is usually between 74° and 76°, for a balanced setup.
Exploring the BMX Chainstay
The BMX chainstay is measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to the centre of the rear axle. This can be fully inserted in the rear dropout (slammed, the shortest chainstay possible) or positioned in the middle of the dropout (centred). The chainstay length is a key factor of your frame, influencing your bike's handling. These lengths typically range from 12 to 14 inches.
Park and street riders who desire a more reactive setup favour a shorter chainstay for executing quick spins and sharp turns. In contrast, trail riders opt for a longer rear end to gain more stability and control.
