BMX Sprockets
How Does a Sprocket Work?
BMX sprockets are essential for generating forward movement on a BMX bicycle. They play a crucial role in your bike’s drivetrain, influencing the overall riding experience. Sprockets are available in a variety of colour schemes and designs to enable you to personalise your setup.
BMX bike sprockets are typically crafted from either aluminium or steel. Aluminium sprockets offer a high strength-to-weight ratio, while steel sprockets provide greater strength and affordability at the expense of being heavier. Additionally, you might want to look into a BMX sprocket guard, especially if you frequently engage in vigorous riding that involves striking rails or kerbs.
Which Sprocket Size Suits BMX Best?
The appropriate sprocket size is dictated by your riding style. BMX sprocket sizes are determined by the number of teeth they possess. In Freestyle BMX bikes, the front sprocket most commonly features between 25 and 28 teeth, though it can range from 16 to 45. Most contemporary freestyle BMX bikes utilise a 25/9 gear ratio.
Increasing the teeth count on the front sprocket leads to a higher gear ratio. This results in more challenging take-offs but allows for achieving higher speeds and exerting more power. Sprockets designed for racing include a greater number of teeth, with many riders favouring a 44/16 ratio.
