Kitesurf Bars
Understanding the Kite Bar
When you're out kitesurfing, the kite bar serves as your steering wheel. It plays a crucial role in transferring energy from the kite to you, the rider, allowing you to speed up, slow down, leap, and manoeuvre. Generally, when discussing a kite control bar, we mean the entire kitesurfing bar and its lines.
Kitesurf bars are available in two variants: 4-line and 5-line. The 4-line bar is more straightforward and commonly used, with less likelihood of the lines becoming tangled. In contrast, the 5-line bar provides a more sophisticated control system and facilitates easier relaunching in light winds.
One frequently asked question is whether kite bars are interchangeable. While not universally true, it is often feasible to combine a kite from one brand with a bar from another. This is particularly prevalent with a 4-line bar.
Selecting the Correct Size Kite Bar
The correct size of bar is essential for an optimal kiting experience. Achieving the appropriate width is crucial—larger kites require larger bars. A smaller bar results in slower response times and makes control more challenging. Typically, the average bar width measures around 52 cm.
Additionally, the length of the kitesurf lines is a significant factor. This generally ranges from 20 to 24 metres. Shorter lines cause the kite to hover lower and react more swiftly and forcefully. Conversely, longer lines allow the kite to ascend higher but with reduced reaction speed.
