Aggressive Skate Wheels
What Are Aggressive Skate Wheels?
Wheels for aggressive inline skating are characteristically smaller than those of other inline skates. Their size varies between 54mm and 64mm, allowing skaters to stay closer to the ground, which enhances control, boosts acceleration, and supports grinds. These wheels are typically very hard with a flat profile, resembling a rounded rectangle. This design aims to equip aggressive skaters with a broad, stable landing area for jumps and tricks.
How Should I Select Aggressive Inline Wheels?
The decision on aggressive wheels depends on your skating style. Harder wheels offer greater speed but slow down on rough urban terrains, thus recommended for smooth-surface park skaters. Conversely, softer wheels are ideal for rough environments, suited for skaters who perform tricks in urban locations.
Profiles of Aggressive Wheels: Flat, Round & Bullet
As previously mentioned, skaters often favour wheels with flat profiles due to their increased stability and the reduced risk of getting caught on bars during grinds.
Nevertheless, aggressive wheels are also available with round and bullet (pointy) profiles. Round wheels are often selected for urban use, providing stability and good manoeuvrability. Bullet profile wheels are the fastest and allow quick turns, though they offer less stability. These are suggested for slalom and freestyle city skating.
Aggressive Grind Wheels for Rails, Boxes and More
Grind wheels are specifically designed for grinding in aggressive skating, which explains their greater hardness and smaller size compared to standard wheels. While normal inline skate wheels tend to have a durometer hardness of around 80 - 90, grind wheels are made to be as hard as possible, often exceeding 100A.
The advantage of hard grind wheels is their ability to slide smoothly across rails, boxes, and similar surfaces without sudden gripping, reducing the risk of imbalance or falls. If utilising an anti-rocker frame, you can replace the grind wheels and switch the front and back to regular aggressive skate wheels when upgrading.
Additionally, to enhance the smoothness of grinds, consider using Skate Wax.
